It’s supposed to be a mini heat wave this week. The forecast for Point Reyes Station on Thursday is 81 degrees! We have officially left the “rainy season” for the SF Bay Area, and we can only hope for some precipitation before things completely dry out in June.

While I will not be sporting skimpy summer-wear, well, pretty much EVER, you are welcome to partake.

One thing is for sure, the hillsides are starting to get that brownish color on them already. We know that we are in a prolonged drought. And we are heading straight into fire season here in Northern California. The good news is that everyone is taking it very seriously. Fire has devastated entire towns. It is scary, but there are things that all of us can do to be better prepared.

There are several websites that are excellent resources for anyone living in West Marin:

These are a few of the great local resources where you can get information about evacuation plans, home hardening, receiving alerts, information on your local disaster groups, and where to learn what is happening in the event of an emergency.

Also, our West Marin Community Response Team, initiated primarily by COVID, but looking towards the future, will be there, with working relationships in place, to help support the community with the services that everyone needs in the event of, well, something that the community might need to respond to! And they have a newsletter, shared here by Community Response Team member – West Marin Commons.

Talk with your neighbors, have a plan, and learn about your local disaster council. Ember Stomp Festival is coming on May 28. A great opportunity to get out and learn about how to be prepared for fire! Educational and fun for the whole family!

Defensible space is important. This is the area directly around your home and outbuildings that should be clear of vegetation and other items that can easily burn.

We all know what is coming, so this gives us the opportunity to get a jump on being prepared!

In other news, We did watch the Radio Rebels presentation put on by our pals at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. I expect that KWMR will get the audio from the panel discussion led by KWMR’s own Larry Rippee, featuring Ben Manilla, Bonnie Simmons, and Ben Fong-Torres. Big props to Ben Manilla for his mentions of KWMR! Keep an eye on the “highlights” for when KWMR will broadcast the audio. It was a great presentation with a glimpse into that time period – a golden age for radio!

And do you know what is cool? KWMR Programmers don’t have to be rebels to play what they want!

Thank you for reading our newsletter and for your support of KWMR!
