How High is the Water, Mama?

⚡ November 3, 2026 ⚡

There are some songs that I like to play on KWMR that other times just don’t feel appropriate. I’m thinking that Johnny Cash’s â€śFive Feet High and Rising” might fall into that category this winter. I’ve been reluctant to play Dave Alvin’s “California’s Burning” during parts of the year as well. They are both excellent songs, but context is everything, right?

Well, there was a lot of great context, research, and information imparted Friday at the Tomales Bay Foundation’s 9th Annual State of the Bay Conference. I was there to attend and record the 24 speakers who presented on water quality, human history, aquaculture, and human activities on Tomales Bay. Starting with yesterday’s episode, we’ll have several Monday “Epicenter” programs featuring the content from the conference.

The first archive includes the conference intro by the Foundation’s Board President Tom Gaman, and then a segment on water quality in Tomales Bay, followed by an update on the Chicken Ranch Beach restoration project. Next week will include a segment on indigenous history with Matthew Johnson from Graton Rancheria and Dewey Livingston’s human history of Tomales Bay.

Future segments will include aquaculture, PhD research projects, boating on Tomales Bay, El Niño, water rescues, and updates from the Marin Agricultural Land Trust and the Point Reyes National Seashore. Stay tuned!

We had a good time at KWMR on Halloween. Mia Johnson-Martinez had a ghostly decorated car in honor of Cartober. KWMR Board President Nancy Vayhinger joined me and a few others to hand out candy to the local kids. We were also watching the Valkyries game. How about them apples?! Congratulations! I was inspired by all things sea level rise and went as a Kelvin Wave. Scary, even though it was a bit obscure and very few people “got it.” Ironically, when Mia Johnson-Martinez along with Jorge and Julie showed up, they had landed on a similar theme with Julie as La Niña, Jorge as a weather-blown reporter, and Mia as a meteorologist.

I have a sneaking suspicion that we may have our hands full this winter. Be sure to sign up for text alerts HERE, and support KWMR’s efforts to be there for you, when you are deep in the goo! DONATE.

Sincerely,

Amanda Eichstaedt
Station Manager and Executive Director

p.s. This weekend coming up is the Stinson Beach DocFest and they are showing some great movies and they serve up some tasty dinners. The venue is really nice! Check out the lineup. See you there!
