From the less messy desk of Amanda Eichstaedt

Not long ago my niece texted me and said she would be blowing through town on a trip to Los Angeles from Seattle with her friend. She wondered if they could crash at our place on the way south. Of course! I am always happy to see her. She spent time a few years back volunteering at KWMR, until she realized the Thrift Store needed help. As a fashion minded thrifter, she thrived in the sorting of new donations and when she headed home after her visit, she needed a second suitcase, and one box shipped. She and her pal stopped at KWMR to let me know that they were in town, before hitting the Thrift Store, then the beach. I asked them why they were going to LA, and the friend muttered “To go to the pants factory.”I paused, hmmm, was the pants factory some super cool, hip place that I had never heard of? Was it slang for “parents?” I was not sure, so I said “Pants factory?” “Yeah, where I get the pants I design manufactured.” Oh, an actual factory that makes pants! Did not see that coming. They were both wearing said pants, and they were pretty darn cool, although not my cup of tea.I caught up with my niece this past weekend when I visited my family in Seattle. She had a good time at the pants factory and checking out LA. It was raining in Seattle (shocker). I took my rain jacket, but did not wear it, since people who live in Seattle just walk around in the rain, ride their bikes in jeans in the rain, and run around in shorts when it’s raining and 47 degrees playing soccer. I love that place where I spent my youth! My people! And it’s going to rain here starting tonight. They are forecasting quite a bit of precipitation along with high winds coming our way in the first atmospheric river of the season. Roy Pitts of the Point Reyes Disaster Council advises to get errands done before the bulk of the rain. It is fortuitous that our King Tides occurred last week and the high tides are not epic over the next few days. Charge up your devices, freeze some bottles of water that you can move into the fridge to help keep the temperatures down in an outage, and do not drive into standing or flowing water. Stay safe!Last Tuesday we tested “Hot Juice” the KWMR generator and all systems were working well in the event that we are needed in a power outage here at the radio station.

KWMR is not doing a fall Pledge Drive and we are counting on folks who deeply value what KWMR provides to the listeners – whether it is this newsletter, our amazing programming, emergency information, or something more abstract. We want you to let us know what you value about KWMR.

The station is working to raise $100,000 by the end of the year and we are at just over $13K now. We have a ways to go, but know that with the support of our over 300 plus donors who participate in our pledge drives, along with people that prefer to do their contributions at the end of the year, that we can make it!

I’m guessing that the only pants that I’ll be needing over the next several days are my rain pants. Which are not nearly as cool as pants from the “pants factory” but they do the job. I guess I have gotten a bit soft living in California. I really do value my rain gear. I even have several umbrellas. Mostly because when it rains here it tends to pour, rather than incessantly drizzle for days on end.

I hope that you will “make it rain” for KWMR’s big end of year fundraiser. And thanks to all of you who have contributed so far. We can’t do it without you. We value each and every one of you! Thanks for your support!
