Roundup: “What Do You Value?”

10/29/2024KWMR

Tuesday Oct 22, 2024
From the less messy desk of Amanda Eichstaedt

As you might remember, KWMR is switching things up and will not be holding our usual Fall Pledge Drive. Instead we are going to reflect on some of the other aspects of KWMR.

We are not abandoning the Pledge Drive model, and will be back with gusto and celebration in the Spring for KWMR’s 26th Birthday.

KWMR is what I would call a “Stewardship Organization.” Stewardship can be explained as “The responsible overseeing and protection of something considered worth caring for and preserving.” That is KWMR, in my book. Stewardship is deeply listening to what is needed and not applying your own interpretation or assessment of need. It means being “in service to,” and not in control of something.

KWMR belongs to all of us. West Marin is very fortunate to have a radio station and I consider myself so lucky to be one of the many stewards of this resource. When we went deep to figure out what the core values are that KWMR brings to West Marin we landed on the following:
I first learned about KWMR after the flood of 2005. I had lived in Olema since October 1st of 2004 (a super WM newbie), when the biggest gullywasher in years separated the towns with flood waters. Once they subsided, I decided I needed to get my hands on the emergency radio for the town of Olema. I was told I needed to go to KWMR and get it from Richard Dillman. So I did, and that was the beginning of my own journey with Emergency Information, then On Air Programming, and finally to a very deep Community Connection. And here I am 20 years later.

This year for KWMR’s Annual Appeal we plan to raise $100,000.00 (the combination of what would have been raised during a pledge drive and our usual End of Year Appeal) based on the values that we all share. The values of Community Connection, Emergency Information, and On-Air Programming. Over the next few months we will be diving deeper into each of these important areas. And we want to hear your thoughts on how each of these values impact your life, whether you are here in West Marin, or appreciate KMWR from afar, touching in when you are able.

If your journey with KWMR is just beginning, know that the possibilities are truly endless. Longtime listeners become KWMR programmers, you hear something on KWMR that informs or entertains you, and you turn to the station in trying times for important, verified information. If you have been a KWMR devotee for a long time, we want to hear from you, too!
