First Car Stories: Sharron’s 1978 Saab
We’re highlighting listener’s first cars…and you all have some good stories.
Here’s one from DJ & Board Member Sharron Drake about her florescent first car…
– Mia Johnson-Martinez, KWMR’s Digital Communication Director
Q: What was your first car?
A: “My first car was a 1978 Saab – a fluorescent-looking powder blue that can only be seen to be believed. Â
I called her BlueBelle – and my Dad helped me with the transaction. $1000 was my max price range, and the other contender for first car, an old VW bug was quickly disqualified by my Dad who, to my horror, told the seller, “This is the absolute worst car I’ve ever seen” – I think that had something to do with the fact that every 100 miles or so, the seller said that coolant needed to be poured into the radiator. Â
But, it was clear when I saw BlueBelle, it was destiny: we met the seller in the lot at Circuit City in San Rafael. Â He worked at Pixar (I’ve looked him up since, and he’s a bigwig there now!) – there was even a little Pixar sticker on the inside of the driver’s side door, I think the same or very similar logo to today’s. Â My Dad noticed this sticker and remarked how cool that is – telling me that they were doing interesting things with computer animation…(this was when George Lucas owned the company and it was made up of a handful of computer nerds).
BlueBelle ended up breaking down every month or so – I struck up a good friendship with the foreign car repair place across from the bowling alley in San Rafael. Â It was years and years of driving her around – and even though I was a frequent customer of the mechanic, it took me years and years to finally send her to the scrap heap in the sky!
Ah, to go back in time and donate her to KWMR!”
