First Car Stories: Elizabeth’s 1963 Volvo
We’re highlighting listener’s first cars…and you all have some good stories.
Here’s one from DJ Elizabeth Underwood about her mushroom-like first car…
– Mia Johnson-Martinez, KWMR’s Digital Communication Director
Q: What was your first car?
A: “First, you need to know that I was born in Los Angeles and, lucky for me, I LOVE to drive. And, I ADORED my first car. Does that sound like an exaggeration? It was a 1963 Volvo station wagon with 2 fender mirrors (really!) in addition to the traditional side view mirrors. They were perfectly round. Everything on this car was round. It was the color of a mushroom, so I named it La Funga. My friends loved her too and called her by name. I took a lot of road trips because the back seat folded down completely flat and we could sleep in the back without pulling down the tail gate. Those were the good old days when I could just pull into a rest stop with my traveling companion and roll out the sleeping bags in the back of the car. I drove it hard—like any good Angeleno would—till it literally blew a gasket. I would still love to have one today! Long live La Funga!”
