Roundup: “Round Em Up!”

Bullseye!

If you were sitting there just staring at your cowboy boots, and wondering, “When is Western Weekend this year?” I can help you out. Western Weekend is June 1st and 2nd, with the parade happening on Sunday. But don’t be wooed only by the closure of our main thoroughfare for the procession. There is a lot of other stuff that goes along with Western Weekend.

Including the 4H sponsored events at Toby’s Feed Barn, and a fun barn dance at the Dance Palace (how appropriate) on Saturday evening. A brand new (for the very first time) Western Weekend website with all the details you might need is in the works. And you can pick up parade entry forms at Building Supply in Point Reyes Station.

So get pondering on how you can include your organization with a float in the parade, and be sure to stick around afterwards and grab some delicious chicken from the Farm Bureau or some tacos from the kids at Tomales High School in the yard at Toby’s. Of course, KWMR will be broadcasting the parade and results from other activities including the youth ag competition, the Rotary Chili Cook Off etc.

Elk Fence Private Tasting with KWMR

KWMR has some really fun events planned around our 25th Anniversary! I wrote all about them in our last newsletter. The Elk Fence tasting event is a private event, held at the distillery in Santa Rosa for donors that support the KWMR Pledge Drive at $1000 or more. Space is limited and there are a few spots still available for folks who have budgeted to support one, or many programs throughout the drive.

If you are asking yourself,”How do I get in on this?” Well, it’s super easy. Just fill out this form and we will be in touch! It will be a nice event with a private tasting of the artisanal spirits created by our own Shorty (“Shorty’s Bunkhouse”) and her business partner Scott Woodson. Missy Will will create a tasting environment with little bites that compliment the spirits. The tasting room is really lovely and has all the touches of high level craft persons Shorty and Scott, including a wonderful selection of vintage jars. The event includes some fun hanging with KWMR peeps, and a tour of the distillery, along with the tasting event. A big thank you to Scott and Shorty for hosting us!

Dallas Smith, Liz Wilhelm, and Seamus Tomkins, hosts of West Marin Naturalist Hour, will be leading the trip through Blue Waters Kayaking. Timing for this trip is 7:30 – 10:30 PM on May 2nd.

We are so thankful to Dallas and Liz for organizing this event and taking part in the planning committee.
So thankful to Dallas, Liz, and Seamus for offering their time to lead the exertion.
And so thankful to Blue Waters Kayaking for only retaining 5% of the booking fee.

Celebration of Maureen (Mo) Blumenthal’s Life

Joe and Mo Blumenthal.   photo: Alyssa Tanner

We lost a beloved member of the KWMR community recently, and a celebration of Mo Blumenthal’s life will be held on Sunday, May 19th at the Dance Palace from 1-4 PM.

I remember back when I met Mo and Joe, well before Joe became a KWMR programmer and was still working. He would take his vacations from working as a cardiologist to do these epic bike rides to raise funds for nonprofit organizations. Joe would pedal the miles and Mo would “sag” for him, driving the van and meeting up with Joe so that they could share the adventure. Mo was also a talented artist as well as a marvelous cook! She made this one minestrone soup, which I am convinced had calming and healing qualities. She would deliver it to the station during pledge drives along with a healthy green salad and some Austrian wafer cookies. I recently purchased these same cookies in honor of Mo.
