Scientists Use Underwater Robot to Photograph the Ocean Floor 1800 Feet Below Surface Aboard a NOAA research vessel about 20 miles off the West Marin coast, KWMR's George Clyde joins Dan Howard, Superintendent of the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and NOAA senior scientist Dr. Elizabeth Clarke for first-ever views of Bodega Canyon. UPDATE: A layer of mud covered the hard substrate in most areas, which is not ideal for deep water coral, although a few corals and sponges were seen where the substrate projected above the mud. The research is part of NOAA's Deep Coral Project, which Jennifer Stock will explore later this year in an edition of "Ocean Currents," her monthly program on KWMR.
