Saturday Night Function is a new locally created and produced music program on KWMR, featuring a rich and varied mix of the blues, rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, zydeco, reggae, funk and contemporary dance music.
KWMR volunteer programmers Marc Matheson and Mark Potts create a classic juke joint atmosphere for late Saturday nights from 10 pm to midnight every week.
Juke (or jook) joints were informal establishments featuring music, dancing, gambling and drinking, primarily operated by African American people in the rural southeastern United States. The term "juke" is believed to derive from the Gullah word joog, meaning rowdy or disorderly. A juke joint is also called a "barrelhouse."
Although there won't be gambling or alcohol served at Saturday Night Function - the name of an early Duke Ellington tune - the listening audience may find yourself moved to dance and groove to our considered selection of elegant, funky and hoppin' melodies. Why not take a break from the routine - or stick around after Rick's Jazz Café closes up for the after party? You won't regret it, and you may well want to come back again.
