KWMR Joins Evens for a Leg of His 154-Mile Walkabout, Hiking All of the Pt. Reyes National Seashore's Trails and Raising Funds for PRNSA.   Biologist Jules Evens tells George Clyde how his walkabout celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Pt. Reyes National Seashore inspired the 2012 Pt. Reyes Trails Challenge of the Pt. Monday, May 28 – Lifeboat Station Surfmen Remembered posted Mon May 28 06:04:55 2012

In this Special Memorial Day Edition of the West Marin Report, We Rebroadcast an Account by John Neff of the Ceremony at the Small Graveyard on the Historic G Ranch.  Ranger Kim Hawkins describes the dangerous job of a surfman at the Pt. Reyes Lifeboat Station, which operated from 1890 to 1969, with the last deaths in 1960.  Links for information about today's 2 PM ceremony at the graveyard and 4 PM reception at the Lifeboat Boathouse and to a history of the Lifeboat StationGeorge Clyde presents.

Thursday, May 24 – Fish & Game Commission on Oyster Controversy posted Thu May 24 05:21:23 2012

California Fish & Game Commission Declines to Adopt Resolution Declaring Its Authority Over Drakes Estero Shellfish Operations.  Former Assemblyman William Bagley urged passage of the resolution, which he said would help Senator Dianne Feinstein negotiate a solution with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.  Commissioner Richard Rogers and other Commissioners favor the continuation of the oyster operations through 2029, but Rogers says it depends on the Park Service's decision. Tomales Bay and Drakes Estero Are Both on Fish & Game Commission Agenda:  An Operation That Will Help Tomales Bay Oyster Companies Overcome Shortages of Oyster Seed, and a Proposed Resolution Asserting F&G Commission Authority Over Commercial Shellfish Operations in Drakes Estero. Oysterman John Finger of Hog Island Oyster Company explains the need for Christopher Starbird's operation to grow seed stock, and George Clyde describes what's coming up in the latest Drakes Estero development.  Links to an article about Starbird's operation and to our report on the April F&G Commission meeting, which gives a preview of what to expect tomorrow.

Thursday, May 17 – The Last Voyage of the “Barbara Faye” posted Thu May 17 06:02:19 2012

The Captain of the 43-Foot Fishing Trawler was Asleep as the Boat Motored under Autopilot and Ran into Limantour Beach Tuesday Morning, According to Sources.  Parker Diving Service's Tim Parker says that they have removed the diesel fuel, and now they will use an excavator to demolish the boat between tides over the next few days.  Link to Joe Soule's sobering video of the boat in the surf Tuesday.  George Clyde reports, with thanks to Richard Dillman.

Wednesday, May 16 – First-Person Account of Whale Rescue posted Wed May 16 06:08:26 2012

How the Whale Entanglement Team Released a Grey Whale from Crab Gear that Held it Captive for Several Days.  Marine Mammal Center volunteer Kathi Koontz tells George Clyde that two sets of crab gear and a rope through its mouth held the whale until freed from the entanglement with a single cut.  Links to Marine Mammal Center description and photos and to the Whale Entanglement Team website.
